The Art of Sarcasm

First off, let me say that Bryce gave me permission to write this story.  Like a good blog mom...blogging it was the first thing I thought of!!

This is going to sound odd, but I have spent years trying to teach Bryce the art of sarcasm!  If you've been here for any amount of time, you know that alot of what I say has a twinge of sarcasm attached to it!  Good, bad or indifferent...it's how I do life.  I also think that if you can't laugh at yourself, you're in for a miserable life!  And I laugh....alot!  I have always tried to teach my boys that.  Bryce is not sarcastic by nature.  In elementary school, he was super sensitive and let anything that was said bother him.  Day after day, I would give him possible "come backs" for people who were ugly or annoying.  He couldn't do it.  He was miserable...and so was I!  Even recently, he will tell me of something someone said and I will sit there and give him example after example of snappy comments.

Well...this week he comes home and tells me of a conversation between himself and a freshman band member.  This guy has driven Bryce crazy since the beginning of band this summer.  He is much shorter than Bryce but likes to act tough and get in Bryce's face.  Just annoying.  This is the exchange that took place this week:

Kid:  Are you a virgin?
Bryce: Yes
Kid:  Awww...man...You just lost some major cool points!
Bryce:  Dude...you're in band...cool points don't count here.

Ohhh....Be still my heart!!!  He did it!!!  I don't think I could have come up with something better myself!!  I even asked Bryce if he had heard that before, but he hadn't.  He came up with it all on his own :)  Makes this mama proud :)  lol...

Bryce and I went shopping for clothes for his homecoming dance yesterday.  I can't tell you how happy I was to be with him.!  I was especially happy that I got to go with a child who didn't need to be pushed in a stroller!  He wasn't so keen on the actual shopping, but we had a great time.  He's actually alot of fun to be with.  I can't wait to see he and his girlfriend all dressed up in a couple of weeks!

When we got home, he sat on the couch with the girls and read them Pinkalicious!  I don't know many high schoolers who would be willing to do that.  His only frustration is that the girls get SO excited when you're reading that book that they try to tell the story before you read it :)  I am used to that...it was driving him nuts.  lol...  So sweet though

DSC_7770 DSC_7771 Bryce also had his first driving session for driver's ed this weekend.  I can't even believe that we are at that point!  How did we get here??  I guess he's going to grow up anyway...I'm just going to enjoy the fact that he's actually pleasant to be around :)

Your boy/man ROCKS!!!! I live by sarcasm and I couldn't have done anything better!!!! My girl and boy do that with stories too AND to top it all off our oldest starts driver's ed soon too. It is so nice to know there is someone out there raising teens and toddlers. Sometimes exhausting all the time rewarding.

I LOVE it!!! I'll admit, I'm a little sad to be so close to it even being an OPTION for our babies to be anything BUT virgins! Help me now, Jesus!

Can't wait to see Bryce and his date all dressed up!

Oh, and I hear ya on enjoying to be around your kid - it's just different than when they were little! Having Cole home this year, we go for bike rides and walks and out for lunch, it's sweet. I'm glad we have this time together :)

Ha...love that comeback. Keep talking and giving advice to those sons...just when you think they are not listening...they are :) Mine are all into their twenties...and I am amazed to see now that they actually heard all I told them all those years :)

He gets ALL my cool points for sporting his "got love?" shirt so proudly!! That says a lot about his character! Way to go in raising him right! :)

Way to go Bryce....our Kira is much like your Bryce and I hope she is able to learn sarcasm like your son has. It's so nice when you enjoy your teen...I have to admit that this past weekend I did NOT enjoy mine... the mood swings and lack of being respectful just throw me for a loop. Enjoy the good days:)

Awesome job momma!!! Our boys sound very similar and I love to share stories like this on with my son to let him know that he is not the only boy in the world who values himself and what he strongly believes in. Glad you shared this!!

LOVE IT!! Oh we can be such good friends!! A friend was leaving my house one day, when all 3 older ones still lived here and the 2 littles and she said "that's one tough crowd in there" speaking about how funny and sarcastic we ALL are with each other!! It is fun isn't it???

So very proud of Bryce, man oh man those high school years are trying and oh so wonderful!!

Haha! I laughed through this entire post! I think your son and I are close to the same age ... and we both play french horn ... and we both lack the ability to use sarcasm. What a stud! :)

Yay for Bryce....that sarcasm will serve him well in the future. Most every word that comes out of my mouth is unfortunately sarcastic:( BTW what a ridiculous question the kid asked!

Do you personally know Pinkalicious by heart?? They are one of our very favorite book series and Hayden just got Silverlicious for her birthday and we are wearing that thing out!! Super cute book if you have not gotten for the girls yet!!!

We just threw a heck of a pinkalicious party over the the weekend. It looked like a truck full of pepto exploded in our house!!! It was pinkalicious times 10!!!

Awesome comeback Bryce! You have taught him well Jen. And so proud that he was not ashamed to answer honestly. Thank God for young guys like him who believe in waiting and are not ashamed to admit it.
