Daddy Frank

Don't cry because it's over...

Smile because it happened.

~Dr. Seuss

Yesterday, Richard and I attended his grandfather's funeral. Frank was one of the most influential people in Richard's life. It is so sad to know that he's gone, but we know he's in a better place. He was 91, and had lived a good life. He stood faithfully by Richard's grandmother until she passed away exactly 1 year ago. We know he is by her side, exactly where he wants to be. We are so thankful to have examples in our life like this wonderful man. He was truly a gift to us.

Bryce had an assignment to write a name poem. When I read what he wrote, I was extremely touched. Here it is:

Bryce
It means strong, smart, fast,
It is 48,
It is like a cloudless sky,
It is going swimming at Gulf Shores,
It is in memory of Daddy Frank,
Who taught me about the B-17 bomber,
When he worked hard in World War II,
My name is Bryce,
It means do what you believe in.

(In case you don't know, Bryce is a huge Nascar fan. His favorite driver is Jimmie Johnson, #48)

I think that is a great tribute to a wonderful man. He lives on in my children.

Oh, Jennifer....How wonderful that your children knew their great-grandfather. People just don't have that these days. And also--praise God that he was able to live a long life with his sweetheart. What a blessing to have that as your children's heritage.

I am sad along with you...my grandmother died a couple of years ago at age 98. I miss her terribly.

Your son is a good writer. Keep that going in him! Encourage him! I loved having students like that!

At the start of your post I loved the Dr Seuss quote...until I got to the end. It did not even compare to Bryce's poem. Wow. What an amazing tribute. And how wonderful that he's been raised to know that Bryce means "do what you believe in."

Praying for you as you miss your family's grandfather.
